299 Steps to Website Heaven

It’s currently 2008, and it still amazes me how many people come to me with
sites that are built in frames and want to know why they’re not listed in google,
Yahoo, MSN etc.

A frameset is a ‘cover’ page for 2 or more ‘frames’ (or other pages) and even
now Google just can’t handle it.

If you look at the code of your website (view
source) and you see the
dreaded ‘frame’ word in there, then the chances are your site is built in
frames.

It’s a big no-no and no self respecting web designer would use frames for a
website, especially not a commercial website.

It’s tempting to used automated submission tools that promise they ‘know the secrets that will get you to the top’ - trust me, they don’t!

However much time you think you will save generating pages with these tools and then submitting to thousands of search engines and directories, believe me, you won’t.

All you’ll get is spam and a possible ban from the important search engines.

Submit to Google et al by hand, not through software; it’s really not worth the risk. (Even better, get a decent link on a decent site and you won’t need to submit at all)

If so, then the following tips that I give to my clients might come in handy

1) On the front page you have the option to update your status - do this at least once a day and include your web address in your status.

As an example, I update mine a few times a day with different message along the lines of “Offering 299 Steps to Website Heaven free at http://www.299steps.com”, and also with links to clients’ sites.

Google spiders the status page (not the front page) and follows the link to your site - this is good
